Artist's Comments

Pencil, Ebony, and White Prismacolor on gray matboard 10x13"

Harry and Hagrid at Gringott's bank, a second illustration for chapter 5, Diagon Alley. I realize I didn't make Hagrid as big as he's supposed to be, and I couldn't quite get the hunched down position that I wanted. I kept nit-picking this thing, and had to force myself to stop.

I think Harry turned out really cute, but the danger of doing a semi-realistic portrayal of Harry is that I'm going to get about a dozen reviews at Artistic Alley saying: "That isn't how I pictured him!" Well, if everyone drew Harry the same way, what would be the point of any kind of artistic portrayal? Maybe I should just do like everyone else and just draw an anime-Harry floating on a blank field of non-space, or worse, on a sheet of lined notebook paper. Those all look the same to me, and there's a billion of them out there, so maybe that's what people want!

OK, this is turning into a rant, and not one aimed at Deviant art users, who are willing to have more imagination.

How do you DO that? The detail in your pictures always blows me away.

This is wonderful! I love how cute Harry looks! Really adorable actually!

NEVER change your style for fandom or for any other silly reason, unless it's a personal one. I love your style as it is and wish more people would develop their own instead of doing the generic anime thing. That's not to say anime and manga are bad, but they don't make my list of styles I like in art.

Anyway, I love all of the weird items that are on the counter that Hagrid had to dig out to find the key! LOL
:icony2jenn:
Oh man, there is so much to look at. I love that you got all the contents of Hagrid's pockets on the counter. The gargoyle decor above the other two goblins cracked me up. I adore it sittin up there. God, I love your work. Harry is so full of wonder and his eyes are so expressive. He LOOKS 11 years old. Well done!

I wish everyone who did Harry Potter work had the ability to capture their characters as well as you do. I see so much fanart here but, while a lot of it IS good, they lose that special something that makes these characters so fantastic. (I won't get into the 'copy and paste' mentality of a lot of the anime fanartists out there.) Don't let those who nitpick about your style get to ya.

I don't have a single crit about this piece. Everything is just so lovely. I think in Hagrid's case, if you had wanted to make him appear hunched over, you could have lowered his chin a bit towards his chest and made his shoulders a little higher. Hmm... he's such a hard character to get exactly right there. He moves so differently. It's hard to get that... Notice I don't have any Hagrid in my gallery! :giggle: But I think you did just fine. It's obviously him, he's got that little bemused twinkle in his eye.

I can't wait to see the next one. :+fav:

You got the dog biscuits! I love all the random stuff in his pockets! Again, you've got all the details and I love the way you see it from behing Fliptrask. :)

One tiny thing i's say was wrong, the only thing, it's the eyes for both the characters. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with Hagrid's, they just don't look 100% right if you know what I mean, and one of Harry's eyes is higher than the other. Apart from that, it's perfect. :)
Pace.

The shading is absolutely amazing!

Jesus, people say that to you? Everyone has their own style...some...er...(idonotlikeshoujoani mestylebutidrawinanimestylesoican'treall ytalk) better than others. Sorry that people are so worthlessly dumb about it :\ The drawing is awesome :D You put so much detail into it, for all the nitpicking I think you did very well. Harry does look adorable x3 His expression is just perfect. And the depth and detail to the background is awesome. I especially like the architecture and sculpture, really neat designs.

I've gotten those types of comments on Artistic Alley. I guess some people don't realize that everyone has their own idea of what the characters look like, even J.K. herself.

Another amazing piece. You have such an eye for detail. Have you ever thought of being an illustrator?
